Τι Είναι το MDF και Γιατί Είναι Τόσο Δημοφιλές;

What is MDF and why is it so popular?

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), in Greek φιλοποδόνη δενίδα και δενίδας , is a pressed artificial wood board, which was invented in the late 70s and its mass production began in the 80s. Since then, it has been used mainly in the manufacture of interior furniture , holding a large share of the market. If you want to learn more about particleboard, you will find our relevant article here .

What is MDF made of?

MDF consists of 3 main components. The first, at a rate of 80-85%, is dehydrated wood microparticles , mainly derived from hardwood. The second main component is resin , at a rate of approximately 10%, while the third main component of MDF is paraffin wax .

Why is MDF so popular?

Perhaps the main reason why MDF is so popular is its cost , which is particularly low as it is a composite wood. At the same time, however, another particularly important reason is its durability , which it owes to the way it is manufactured. As it consists of compressed fibers and resin, it is particularly resistant to pressure and impacts, making it the ideal material for the construction of furniture such as shelves , storage cabinets , sideboards and doors. Finally, MDF uses recycled wood, so it is considered environmentally friendly .

Are there any negative points of MDF?

As with any other material, MDF also has some negative points. The first is its relatively low resistance to moisture . If it absorbs a large amount of moisture, MDF may swell, losing its cohesion. Another disadvantage is its weight , which is greater than that of natural wood and particleboard , due to its density.
