How to Make a Natural and Aromatic Insect Repellent for Summer Days

Summer is the season when we enjoy the sun, going out and relaxing on the terrace or in the garden . However, with it come... unwanted guests: mosquitoes and other annoying insects. If you are looking for a natural, economical and musky way to protect yourself, we have the solution for you!

Let's see how we can easily and quickly create our own DIY insect repellent, using materials we already have at home or that are easily found in stores.

The necessary materials for natural insect repellent

To achieve effectiveness and a pleasant aroma, we will need essential oils with known insect repellent properties. Their combination offers protection and scents the space in a natural way.

The most useful essential oils for preparation are:

  • Lemongrass (citronella)
  • Lavender
  • Eucalyptus
  • Mint or spearmint
  • Tea tree

In addition, we will need distilled water and some pure alcohol or witch hazel, to properly mix the ingredients and preserve the mixture.

Step by step preparation

  1. We take a clean spray bottle.
  2. Fill half with distilled water.
  3. Add 1-2 tablespoons of alcohol or witch hazel.
  4. Add 10-15 drops of each essential oil of your choice. Ideally, we can start with lemongrass and lavender, as they offer excellent protection and a wonderful aroma.
  5. Close the bottle tightly and shake vigorously.

Our natural insect repellent is ready!

How and where we use it

We can spray it directly on the skin (it is enough to first test on a small area for possible allergies), on clothes, on sheets, but also in the space, either at home or outside. This aromatic mixture acts as a mosquito repellent and at the same time refreshes the atmosphere.

Tips for greater efficiency

  • Shake the bottle well before each use to mix the oils with the water.
  • Store the mixture in a cool and shady place.
  • We repeat the use every few hours, especially on hot summer nights.

Why should we prefer natural insect repellents?

DIY insect repellents contain no chemical additives, are safer for the skin, environmentally friendly, and extremely economical. Plus, we can customize their scent to our liking.

So, let's enjoy a summer without bites and without unpleasant odors. With a simple recipe, we protect ourselves naturally and smell great!
