8 Common Mistakes to Avoid Regarding Interior Design

Anyone who is even an amateur in interior decoration knows that it is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. However, there are certain mistakes that are so common that if you avoid them, the final result will be very close to ideal. Here are eight of them, from leading interior designers:

Avoid plain, white walls unless the architecture requires it. 90% of the time, white walls make everything on them seem to "float" on the wall. Using a mid-tone or neutral color unifies all the pieces. The only times white works is if it's a conscious design decision with a limited color palette, using a lot of texture or contrast. - Rachel Blindauer

One of the most common mistakes we see has to do with scale and proportion . This applies to all aspects of a project, whether it’s the scale and proportion of furniture , kitchen details, or even decor accessories . Most people are afraid to go big, but sometimes the old adage “bigger is better” holds true. Don’t be afraid to be bold! - Laura Britt

When you walk into a room, it should be like a cityscape... a mix of different heights. You don't want everything in the room to be at the same level. Use different heights in your furniture and in the placement of wall decorations . - Linda Floyd

Don't live with something you hate just because someone gave it to you or you inherited it! Remove it from the room immediately and you will feel much better. - Ann J. Chapdelaine

Overly careful coordination of a room leaves it flat. It's the unexpected element that personalizes the room, the memento from your vacation, a special gift, or a pillow that caught your eye, these are the things that make the room come alive. - Annette Phillips

Having no focal point in the room or having many. The space should work around a focal point. - Marcia Wood

How you hang your artwork is crucial. Don't take the "snapshot" approach, with one piece of art hanging in each space at roughly the same height. Don't hang them too high—as if they're floating on their own. And don't forget to leave some space for your eyes to rest. Not every wall surface should be covered. Consider the entire composition of the room. - Valerie Steil

Never go shopping without a plan. Knowing your layout is the beginning of all good things. - Laura Gills
